Abstract
Subluxation can occur in the lower cervical spine secondary to hyperflexion or hyperextension injury. Depending on the way the injury occurs, rotational and lateral stresses may also be involved. In the characteristic whiplash injury, there is a combination of hyperflexion and hyperextension stresses in a temporal sequence.
