Early Diagnosis and Preventive Therapy in Parkinson’s Disease

Part of the book series: Key Topics in Brain Research ((KEYTOPICS))

Summary

Seventy-four of 78 patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) had Lewy bodies in the substantia nigra. Two without Lewy bodies had striatonigral degeneration and two had post-encephalitic pathology. Lewy bodies in controls occurred in 3.6% to 11.1% between the sixth and tenth decades, and similar figures were obtained in other common parkinsonian disorders and Alzheimer’s disease. Lewy bodies can also occur in corticobasal degeneration and Hallervorden-Spatz disease. The pathological diagnosis of PD depends on finding Lewy bodies in the substantia nigra, but other parkinsonian disorders must be excluded.
