The lateral percutaneous approach to discectomy
Percutaneous approaches to lumbar disc disease have evolved as a response to the morbidity generated by the variety of open procedures available. Two basic approaches have been pursued: a posterolateral approach similar to that used for vertebral biopsy or chymopapain injection ; and a straight lateral approach. The following text concerns the latter approach and the results of its utilization at the University of Florida [1, 2].
