Abstract
Diabetes mellitus represents a serious complication of pregnancy. Besides maternal jeopardy by metabolic derangements (Hollingsworth, 1984) increased perinatal and neonatal mortality are well documented (Weiss and Hofmann, 1985). About 50% of the perinatal mortality is caused by severe congenital malformations which are found about two to three times more frequently in diabetic pregnancies (Burkart etal., 1987; Fuhrmann, 1982). The stillbirth rate due to acute placental insufficiency is still increased in comparison to a population of nondiabetic mothers (Weiss and Hofmann, 1985). In prior years premterm delivery was recommended to avoid stillbirth; the risks of an immature newborn seemed to be of less concern.
