Electrical Stimulation of the Gasserian Ganglion for Facial Pain: Preliminary Results

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Acta Neurochirurgica Supplementum ((STEREOTACTIC,volume 39))

Abstract

Electrical stimulation of the Gasserian ganglion for the relief of intractable trigeminal pain is a method introduced by Shelden6 using an apparatus inserted via the classical subtemporal approach1. Ten years later this technique was reintroduced in the treatment of atypical facial pain by Meyerson and Håkanson5 who applied the modern technology of neurostimulation. A few years later Steude7,8 and Meglio4 modified the technique for percutaneous application.
