Abstract

In 1937, the tradition-loving British were stocked when King Edward VIII fell in love with Miss Simpson, a movie actress, and abdicated. Somewhat later, Bogomolets said in his opening speech at a conference that a Miss Simpson may soon appear in endocrinology, taking away the crown from adrenaline. Indeed, the researches carried out in the subsequent decades and the rapid development of the concept of stress and universal reactions may seem to have produced a new competitor for the leading role in endocrinology: glucocorticoids. As physiology developed, everything seemed to fit into the right place and the polyregulatory nature of most of the organism’s complex reactions (in whose initiation catecholamines play a big role) seemed to have been established.
