Abstract
The scope and the limitations of scientific methods in the field of art history and the conservation of works of art are first discussed in general. The important role of microchemistry in this field is illustrated by a case study. The object considered is the altar piece by Michael Pacher in St. Wolfgang, Abersee, Upper Austria. It is shown, that the determination of the painting materials and techniques used, aids the art historian in the difficult question of distinguishing different hands of artists.
