Abstract

Qualitative and quantitative changes in the exposure pattern of modern mankind to chemical, and the increasing awareness of new types of diseases caused by irreversible damages (mutagenesis, carcinogenesis, teratogenesis) have prompted a revision of safety testing strategies of drugs, and occupational and environmental chemicals. New elements of toxicological methodology are: pharmaco-kinetics, metabolism of xenobiotics, identification of toxic metabolites by examination of excretable and non-excretable reaction products with biomolecules, and short-term tests. Proper use of these elements in testing procedures decisively improves the prediction of toxic reactions in humans.
