Transplantation of the Rectus femoris Muscle

  • Chapter
Muscle Transplantation

Abstract

Pioneer work in muscle transplantation was carried out by Tamai, Kubo, Harii and Ikuta [1–4]. The first use of the rectus femoris muscle in a human was performed May 20, 1976, in a 49 year old man whose flexor aspect of the forearm was severely injured in an industrial accident. Prior reconstructive steps included initial debridement and coverage with a pedicle skin flap; with later sural nerve grafting to reconstruct the median and ulnar nerves.
