Paleo-Stress Fields Around the Mediterranean Since the Mesozoic from Microtectonics. Comparison with Plate Tectonic Data

Tectonic Stresses in the Alpine-Mediterranean Region

Part of the book series: Rock Mechanics / Felsmechanik / Mécanique des Roches ((ROCK,volume 9))

Abstract

The method is mainly based on microtectonic measurements in sedimentary rocks: tectonic stylolites, tensional joints, shear planes and faults. Several thousand measurements in different Mesozoic and Tertiary stratigraphic levels from Turkey, Israel, Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Spain, Portugal, France, Southern England, Southern Italy and Sicily, indicate orientations of local and regional tectonic compressive events, relative chronology and age. These data are compared with the structural evolution of each country.

A sketch of the structural evolution since Upper Cretaceous in the Europe-African-Arabian collision zone is deduced from the compressive events. It gives new elements for the plate tectonic evolution models and continental collisions in the Mediterranean area.
