Summary
The lining resistance p a of rock anchors is usually computed as an equal pressure acting from the opening towards the tunnel surface, because no better methods are available.
It is evident, however, and has been confirmed by observations made in tunnels, that the anchor length has a considerable influence on deformation. In addition, it appears that the anchors also act as dowels.
The degree to which the amount of deformation is influenced by anchor length, that is to say the force of the far end of the rock anchor directed towards the cavity, has been investigated already by Egger.
The results of this investigation have been taken into account here in so far as additional anchor characteristics for different anchor lengths were plotted, in addition to the usual characteristic lines which hold for a lining resistance that acts merely as an internal pressure (e. g. concrete ring or anchors of infinite length). It is therefore possible to optimize the number and length of rock anchors.
The dowel action of the rock anchors was investigated by Bjurström in large-scale in situ shear tests and by Feder in laboratory experiments with concrete. With the aid of the equation given by Bjurström an increased shear strength can be inferred which is a function of the steel cross section and of the strengths of steel and rock.
This increased shear strength, too, can be accounted for in the additional characteristic lines of the rock anchors.
The additional characteristic lines of the rock anchors therefore describe the influence of anchor length and dowel action which can thus be taken into consideration in dimensioning the anchors.
