Abstract

The progress of knowledge in the field of epilepsy is closly associated with the development of stereoneurosurgery providing unique opportunities for delicate operations on deep brain structures under careful neurophysiological control. In the Neurosurgical Institute of Leningrad 400 stereotactic procedure have been carried out since 1960, of which more than 100 were for temporal and generalized epilepsies. Two kinds of stereotactic performances have been used, viz. the method of implanted long-term multicontact electrodes and one-stage stereotaxis. Stereoelectrosubcorticography, when compared with EEG and electrocorticography and neuronal activity, enabled us to obtain an idea on the functional organization of epileptogenic foci for the cortical, subcortical and extensive multi-focal brain lesion.
