Abstract

The atmosphere contains a wide variety of elements and in greatly varying concentrations. The average composition with respect to all known elements and compounds is shown in Table 137. Concentration of gases are expressed in atmospheres, those of particulate matter in microgram per m3 (μg · m−3). The table is not complete as there is a number of organic compounds present the composition of which are by and large unknown. In precipitation the concentration of organic matter is about the same as of inorganic matter. Organic compounds have been found in precipitation (Neumann et al. 1959) especially substances behaving like hunus. Also fats or fatty acids have been shown to occur.
