Zusammenfassung

The mechanism of ignition has been the subject of speculation from the time that the first contributions were made to a study of the kinetics of chemical change, but, owing to the complexity of the majority of explosive reactions, most of the important advances in this field have occurred within the last twenty years. As early as 1884 van t’Hoff 1 had expressed the idea that any reaction would become self-accelerating and eventually explosive if heat was liberated more rapidly than it could be dissipated, but this simple theory needs considerable elaboration to explain many remarkable phenomena shown by mixtures of combustible gases.
