Zusammenfassung
Beim Durchgang einer beliebigen Strahlung durch einen beliebigen Körper erleidet die Strahlung eine Schwächung. Diese Tatsache ist der unmittelbare, sinnfällige und meßbare Ausdruck dafür, daß die Strahlung mit dem Körper in Wechselwirkung tritt. Das Ausmaß dieser Wechselwirkung ist in hohem Maße von der Natur und Energie der Strahlung, ebenso aber in hohem Maße von der Phase und der chemischen Zusammensetzung des Körpers abhängig. Dabei kann es keinem Zweifel unterliegen, daß in einem beliebigen Medium nur derjenige Anteil einer Strahlung irgend eine Wirkung verursachen kann, der beim Durchgang dieser Strahlung im Medium zurückgehalten wird (sogenanntes Gesetz von Grotthus-Draper). Alle feststellbaren Wirkungen, seien sie physikalischer, chemischer oder biologischer Natur, sind demnach mit dem Schwächungsvorgang der Strahlung im beobachteten Medium ursächlich aufs engste verknüpft. Die Frage, welche Wirkungen bei einer Bestrahlung auftreten, ist zunächst weniger eine solche nach der Art der Strahlung, als vielmehr eine solche nach den Reaktionsmöglichkeiten des die Strahlung aufnehmenden Systems. Es ist deshalb der Schwächungsvorgang Ursache und Ausgang aller Strahlenwirkungen und die manifest werdenden Wirkungen wesentlich Folgen der Natur des schwächenden Objekts. Es darf demnach gesagt werden, daß in einem bestrahlten Objekt alle beobachtbaren Reaktionen (z. B. Photoeffekt, Lumineszenz, Erwärmung, Ionisation, chemische Reaktionen) in mehr oder weniger hohem Maße ausgelöst werden, wobei allerdings der die Strahlung schwächende Körper in sehr verschiedenem Maße im einzelnen auf die Strahlung manifest reagiert.
