Zusammenfassung
Mittelirland, eingeschaltet zwischen die Bergländer des N und S, reicht im W ungef. von Galway bis über das Shannonästuar, in der M. von den Bergen von Leitrim bis an das Knie des Suir oberhalb Clonmel, im E, bedeutend schmäler, von Dundalk bis Dublin. Alle vier Provinzen haben an ihm Anteil: Connacht mit dem größeren E-Flügel der Gr. Galway, dem sö. Mayo, Leitrim und Boscommon (vgl. S. 1213 f.), Munster mit den Gr. Clare, Limerick, Tipperary und dem n. Kerry, Leinster mit den Gr. Longford, Westmeath, Meath, Louth, Dublin, Offaly, Laoighis, Kildare und dem größten Teil der Gr. Kilkenny und Carlow ; Ulster mit Cavan und dem s. Monaghan (im ganzen also 20 Gr.). Rund l¾ Mill. E. (einschließlich Dublin) entfallen auf Mittelirland, d. i. 7/12 der Ges.Bevölkerung des Freistaates. Bei einer Fl. von etwa 38 000 km2 entspricht dem (unter Abrechnung von Dublin) eine Volksdichte von 32 E. je km2.
