Das Wort Palliativ ist abgeleitet von „Pallium“, „palliare“, mit einen Mantel bedecken, im Sinne des Linderns von Symptomen einer Erkrankung. Bei dieser Pflege bekommt der Patient einen Mantel der Fürsorge umgehängt: to care. Es ist eine Pflege, die lindern möchte, wenn nicht mehr geheilt werden kann.
