Die den Menispermaceae angehörigen Pflanzen umfassen derzeit mehr als 260 Arten. Da sie jedoch größtenteils in den tropischen Zonen einheimisch sind, wurden sie während längerer Zeit von den meisten europäischen Forschern außer acht gelassen.
