Zusammenfassung

Im Gegensatz zur Kunst der Medizin, welche bis zum Morgengrauen der Zivilisation zurückreicht, oder den wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen der Otolaryngologie. welche mit der Erfindung des Kehlkopfspiegels in 1854 begann, entwickelte sich das Spezialgebiet der Stimm- und Sprachpathologie aus den praktischen Anwendungen der experimental-phonetischen Methoden um die Wende des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ursprünglich wurde die Stimm- und Sprachheilkunde hauptsächlich von jenen europäischen Laryngologen betrieben, welche an der neuen Beschäftigung mit der phoniatrischen Forschung besonders interessiert waren. Bald aber begann die Stimm- und Sprachheilkunde, auch viele nicht-medizinische Spezialisten heranzuziehen. Auf dem europäischen Kontinent wird die Audio-Phoniatrie weiterhin hauptsächlich von ärztlich ausgebildeten Spezialisten geleitet. In den Vereinigten Staaten jedoch bedeutet die Zahl der ärztlichen Mitglieder in der American Speech and Hearing Association eine infinitesimale Minderheit.
