Abstract

Throughout human history life on earth has been threatened by all kinds of man-made disasters. In our time, man seems to have exceeded himself in creating actual and potential disasters, the greatest of which have resulted from his ability to wage technologically powerful and totally destructive warfare. The instruments of men, when turned against mankind, set off an almost inevitable chain of effects and events, of which not the least are psychological in nature. It is, however, only comparatively recently that we have developed the concepts and frameworks that make it possible to interpret and predict the psychic consequences of man-made disasters.
