Abstract

The Vernonieae are characterized by the occurrence of highly oxygenated germacranolides and by simple polyacetylenes as well as by the absence of diterpenes, phenyl propanes and p-hydroxyacetophenone derivatives. However, some groups of genera or species differ from this general picture. Glaucolides are absent, with two exceptions, from species of the subtribes Pseudostifftinae, Lychnophorinae, Centratherinae and Elephantopinae, but common in the Vernoniinae, especially in the large genus Vernonia, but also in the subtribes Piptocarphinae and Rolandrinae. Again there are exceptions in the subtribe Vernoniinae. Some genera and a few Vernonia spp. only contain the rare 5-alkylcoumarins, guaianolides, elemanolides or furoheliangolides. The chemistry of the African genus Corymbium supports its exclusion from the tribe.
