Abstract
Not all damaged menisci can be treated by partial excision or by repair. The loss of a meniscus will be followed by the development of osteoarthrosis in the majority of cases [3, 4, 16, 20, 21,23,24,28,29]. Standard treatment options for symptomatic postmeniscectomy osteoarthrosis include osteotomy [15] and knee arthroplasty [34]. Both procedures give benefit only for a limited period of time and are therefore less well suited for the younger patient. Based on this dilemma the idea of meniscus replacement was established [2, 11]. Meniscus transplantation was the first and remains to be the most frequent type of meniscus replacement to date.
