Der Clusterkopfschmerz wird nach den Kriterien der International Headache Society wie folgt definiert (Tabelle1):

Der Clusterkopfschmerz ist ein relativ klar definiertes Kopfschmerzsyndrom, dessen Beschreibung bereits vor Hunderten von Jahren erfolgte (in einem Schriftstück von Gerhard van Swieten aus dem Jahr 1745) (Isler 1993).
