Selective peripheral neurotomies for the treatment of spasticity

  • Chapter
Neurosurgery for Spasticity

Abstract

When an excess of a spasticity leads to disequilibrium in the tonic balance of a limb segment and if the concerned group of muscles is under the control of a single peripheral nerve, neurotomy at its level may be indicated. Neurotomies cut all types of sensory fibers as well as motor fibers: therefore they must be as selective as possible. Neurotomies reequilibrate the tonic balance between agonist and antagonist muscles. This results in reduction of abnormal joint postures and improvement in residual voluntary movement.
