Abstract
It seems that the art or technique of artificial mummification has never been forgotten entirely in Western and Middle Europe since the Early Middle Ages, even if one can rarely find any physical evidence. It is rather a scientific gap than contemporary technical ignorance as this subject has rarely been investigated. Yet since the discovery of the Iceman from the Similaun-glacier fortunately also this subject has met more attention.
