Abstract

The solidification behavior of Fe-V-C-M alloys was studied by differential thermal analysis. The composition of cubic vanadium carbides VC X was analysed by quantitative electron probe microanalysis. The addition of a quaternary element (Mo, Al, Cu) induced changes in the crystallization path, the morphology of the carbides (Al) and the composition of the vanadium carbides (Mo, Al). Moreover, the stoichiometry (x) of the carbides depends on the nature of the addition.
