Abstract

Your organizing committee has been courageous enough to give me the honour of delivering an opening address at this learned gathering, since I have neither an ethical nor a neurosurgical background. It is nevertheless my intention to point out some differences in conceptions of Asian and European mentalities which should of course lead to divergent bio-ethical philosophies and practices. I base myself on my experiences over more than 14 years in Asia. I hope to have you share with me the final result of our mental tour of Asia and Europe, which will be that significant differences do exist, but that in fact they do matter less and less for the subject matter of this introduction.
