In die Klassifikation der Epilepsien bzw. Epilepsiesyndrome fließen die folgenden drei Kriterien ein: 1. fokale vs. generalisierte Epilepsien; 2. idiopathische vs. symptomatische vs. kryptogenetische Epilepsien und 3. Alter zu Beginn der Erkrankung (Commission on Classification and Terminology of the International League against Epilepsy 1989) (Tabelle 6.1).
