Abstract

One of the major promising potentials of FDAP is the detection and delineation of clinically ill-defined neoplastic skin areas. It is a fascinating phenomenon that the topical application of a certain substance (ALA) leads to the specific accumulation of fluorescing molecules in skin tumors. This selectivity of fluorescence takes place although the ALA-containing ointment is applied also to the normal skin within a certain safety margin. Making use of this phenomenon, the total tumor area including the surrounding borders of superficial and nodular BCC, SCC and SK can be visualized prior to excision.
