Zusammenfassung
Die Ribonukleinsäure ist von ihrem Aufbau her als Polynukleotid auf zufassen, d. h. sie besteht aus einer großen Zahl von Einzelbausteinen, die sich in ihrer Konstitution prinzipiell gleichen. Die Bauelemente, die Nukleotide, setzen sich wieder aus drei kleineren Komponenten zusammen, nämlich Phosphorsäure, einem Kohlenhydrat und einer Stickstoff-haltigen heterocyklischen Base (Nukleobase). In einem RNS-Molekül können einige Dutzend bis mehrere Tausend Nukleotide zu kettenförmigen Makromolekülen verbunden sein. Das Molekulargewicht schwankt deswegen zwischen 2 × 104 bis 3 × 106.
