Abstract

In all organisms except the viruses, bacteria (Hopwood and Glauert 1960 a; Kellenberger et al. 1958), and blue green algae (Hopwood and Glauert 1960 b; Ris and Singh 1961), the chromosomes are separated from the rest of the cell by two concentric membranes, which together constitute the nuclear envelope 1. The physiological properties of the envelope, which have so far been difficult to define, clearly set a limit to the types of interactions which can occur between nucleus and cytoplasm. Except for the relatively short period during mitosis when the envelope breaks down, transport of materials to and from the chromosomes must occur across this barrier. The envelope therefore occupies a central position in all discussion of nucleo-cytoplasmic interaction. With this role in mind we may examine the structure of the nuclear envelope as revealed by the electron microscope.
