Abstract

Moderate hypothermia can be defined as reduction of body temperature to levels above 30° C (rectal). It differs physiologically and technically from the deep hypothermia of vascular surgery using temperatures lower than 27° C. Moderate hypothermia obviates the risk of ventricular fibrillation, it is easier to achieve and can be prolonged for one or several days. Its effect in lowering metabolism and protecting the brain are less but its applications are wider, especially in cranio-cerebral trauma.
