Abstract
An analysis of “living matter” reveals that protoplasm is a very complicated mixture of organic and inorganic substances. Proteins, nucleic acids and lipids are the normal components of this mixture. Many products of protoplasm (e. g. cellulose) fall in the class of the polysaccharides. As these substances frequently show the properties of colloidal systems our first task will be to give a very short survey of colloid science, which will enable us to classify the various biocolloids.
