Zusammenfassung

Die Hydrophobierung, d. i. die Verminderung der Wasseraffinität von Textilien, die im Grenzfall bis zur Unempfindlichkeit und Undurchlässigkeit von Wasser geht, gehört mit zu den ältesten Verfahren der Textilindustrie. Dieser Industriezweig wurde aus dem Bestreben entwickelt, die Ware vor dem schädlichen Einfluß des Wassers zu bewahren, bzw. einen Schutz gegen Wetterunbilden zu geben. Schon frühzeitig wurden Wagendecken (Piachen), Zeltwerk u. dgl. wasserundurchlässig gemacht. Man behandelte das Textilgut mit trocknenden Ölen, etwa Leinölfirnis, wodurch nach dem Trocknen die einzelnen Fasern und die Zwischenräume zwischen diesen mit einer homogenen, filmartigen Schicht erfüllt wurden, die sich über das ganze Gewebe erstreckte und die Wasserdichtigkeit gewährleistete (Öltucherzeugung).
