Abstract
A simple connection was experimentally found between the amplitudes of world-wide variations of cosmic ray intensity and the dependence of this intensity on geomagnetic latitude. It turns out that these variations can be interpreted as changes of an electric potential of the Earth against the deep space. The sun’s activity seems to govern this potential. An independent indication for this arises from the difference in the energy spectra of primary protons and α-particles. In undisturbed regions a higher and possibly dangerous cosmic ray intensity is expected, but these regions may be at the boundaries of the planetary system. Attention is called to the high intensities that occur after the rare outbursts of solar cosmic rays and to particles trapped in the earth’s magnetic field.
