From Balloon Capsules to Space Cabins

Abstract

The manned balloon flights of 1957 and 1958 have yielded valuable data in two areas:

• 1. The study of the psychological and physiological responses of human subject to the space-equivalent environment at altitudes above 99% of the earth’s atmosphere.

• 2. The development of the sealed space cabin, its structure, its artificial environment, and its instrumentation, and the concept of the manned balloon capsule as a forerunner in the step-by-step program of the United States in putting man in space.

It is now generally recognized in scientific circles that the manned balloon-capsule is the prototype for the manned space cabin. It serves not only for the study of the human factors of space flight but for the selection and training of space pilots and is a test bed for the multitude of accessories and components which will eventually go into the construction of the sealed cabin which will carry the first man into space. The paper is illustrated by slides and graphs showing results of these balloon flights and their significance in preparing for manned flight.

Zusammenfassung

Die bemannten Ballonfiüge der Jahre 1957 und 1958 haben wertvolle Tatsachen ergeben, und zwar auf zwei Gebieten:

• 1. Das Studium der psychologischen und physiologischen Reaktionen des in die weltraumgleiche Umgebung in Höhen von über 99% der irdischen Atmosphäre versetzten Menschen.

• 2. Die Entwicklung der versiegelten Raumkabine, ihre Bauart, ihre künstliche Umgebung, ihre Instrumentierung, und der Begriff der bemannten Ballonzelle als Vorläufer in dem schrittweisen Programm der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, den Menschen in den Weltraum zu setzen.

Es wird jetzt in wissenschaftlichen Kreisen allgemein angenommen, daß die bemannte Ballonzelle das Vorbild für die bemannte Raumkabine ist. Sie dient nicht nur dem Studium menschlicher Reaktionen im Raumflug, sondern auch der Auswahl und Ausbildung der Raumpiloten und ist eine Prüfungsgrundlage für die zahllosen Ausrüstungen und Bestandteile, die gegebenenfalls zum Bau der versiegelten Kabine nötig sein werden, um den ersten Menschen in den Weltraum zu tragen. Der Aufsatz ist mit Bildern und graphischen Darstellungen versehen, die die Resultate dieser Ballonflüge und deren Bedeutung in der Vorbereitung des menschlichen Raumfluges zeigen.

Les vols dirigés de ballons de 1957 et 1958 ont fourni des renseignements intéressants sur les deux points suivants:

• 1. L’étude des réactions psychologiques et physiologiques de l’être humain soumis à un milieu équivalent aux espaces interplanétaires à des altitudes supérieures à 99% de celle attribuée à l’atmosphère terrestre.

• 2. Le développement de la cabine interplanétaire hermétique, sa structure, son milieu artificiel, et son équipement: ainsi que le concept de la capsule ballon dirigée comme prélude aux programme que les U.S.A. entreprennent, pas à pas, pour mettre l’homme dans l’espace.

Il est maintenant généralement reconnu dans les milieux scientifiques que la capsule ballon dirigée est le prototype de la cabine interplanétaire dirigée. Elle sert non seulement à l’étude des facteurs humains impliqués dans les vols interplanétaires, mais elle permet aussi la sélection et l’entraînement des pilots interplanétaires. D’autre part, c’est un banc d’essai pour les nombreux accessoires et matériaux qui, éventuellement, entreront dans la construction de la cabine hermétique qui transportera le premier homme dans l’espace. L’article est illustré de photographies et graphiques montrant les résultats de ces vols de ballon et leur importance dans la préparation du vol interplanétaire de l’homme.
