Abstract

The phenomenon of combustion instability in rocket motors is an oscillatory interaction between gas flow and combustion of the propellant in such a way that pressure oscillations with frequencies of 500 to 50,000 cy/sec develop with peak-to-peak amplitudes comparable to the mean pressure. A qualitative description is presented of the phenomenon; difficulties of experimental study are discussed and mechanisms of excitation and suppression of instability are described.
