Abstract
A brief history is given of Explorer satellite launchings together with a description of payload instrumentation. A summary is presented of results of experiments made in the following areas:
1. Temperatures of both case and internal instrumentation; 2. Micrometeorite activity; 3. Cosmic-ray intensity.
The results of preliminary analyses of these various measurements as carried out by the responsible institutions are given, together with a discussion of their implications for future measurements of this type.
This paper presents the results of one phase of research carried out at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under Contract No. DA-04-495-Ord 18, sponsored by the Department of the Army, Ordnance Corps (External Publication No. 514 of Jet Propulsion Laboratory).
