Abstract
Consider two massive spheroidalbodies (oblate ellipsoids of revolution) rotating about their polar axes and attracting each other according to Newton’s law of gravitation. The total energy of the system can be expressed as a double power series in the meridional eccentricities of the spheroids. The equations for the relative motion of the centroids and for the angular motion of the two sets of body axes, with respect to an inertial barycentric reference system, constitute a system of seven nonlinear differential equations of the second order. Following Kondurar’s approach (Soviet Astronomy, October, 1961), the solutions of the differential system have been expressed as power series of two small parameters (the squares of the meridional eccentricities), each approximation satisfying a system of linear differential equations depending on lower order approximations. The paper deals with first-order perturbations having considered an elliptic Kepler orbit as the zero-order approximation for the relative motion of the centroids. The mean anomaly of the unperturbed elliptic motion was chosen as the independent variable, thus requiring the expression of the Hansen coefficients to perform the transformation from true to mean anomaly. Explicit expressions have been obtained for the perturbations of the coordinates of the centroids, the nutation and precession angles of the body axes as functions of the mean anomaly and in terms of the orbital eccentricity and the two meridional eccentricities (thes e three quantities being considered of the same order of magnitude). Secular and periodic terms were obtained. Abrief discussion of the results was undertaken for the case of an oblate artificial satellite moving in the gravitational field of an oblate Earth. The formulae of this paper are, however, applicable to the general case of two celestial bodies of comparable masses and agree, under the assumption of rigidity, with Z. Kopal’s results (Close Binary Systems, 1959).
The author is indebted to Professor J. Kovalevsky of the Bureau des Longitudes for having brought to his attention a number of earlier papers by Kondurar and Duboshin published in various Soviet journals, discussing both the rotational and translational aspects in the motion of two bodies.
