Abstract
The hepatitis D virus was first described by Rizzetto et al. (1977) as hepatitis delta antigen. Since then, HDV has become the focus of worldwide investigation and interest. Major advances have led to an understanding of its structure, genomic organization, clinical course and epidemiology. The delta antigen initially a poorly explained finding of immunofluorescence staining in liver biopsy samples from Italian chronic HBsAg carriers now stands as a unique and important viral agent and known as hepatitis D virus (HDV) (Fig. 19; courtesy of Prof. M. Rizzetto).
