Abstract

After a short introduction on the physical foundations of the acoustoelastic effect, its applications to the determination of applied and residual stresses and texture are discussed. Available techniques, based on the use of bulk and surface waves, are briefly reviewed. One of the methods, based on a perturbation of the equation of motion, is then applied to the case of Rayleigh waves propagating on the surface of a material plate, made of orthotropic polycrystalline aggregates.
