Summary

Fluorescence techniques were used for the estimation of epinephrine, dopamine and norepinephrine in hypophysial portal vein blood of rats. The techniques employed allow the detection of norepinephrine and dopamine in blood collected from one adrenal vein in a single rat over a 2-hour period, and they also allow the detection of norepinephrine in systemic blood pooled from several rats.

Epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine were not detectable in pools of 8 individual 2-hours samples of hypophysial portal vein blood, collected during metoestrus, pro-oestrus and oestrus. It is concluded that, if any catecholamines at all were secreted into the portal circulation, the amounts in these pools were less than 50 ng. Such low concentrations do not interfere with the determination of luteinising hormone releasing factor (LRF) in hypophysial portal blood by the ovarian ascorbic acid depletion method.
