Summary

Animal experiments show that there is a correlation between (a) the sex hormone levels during the critical phase of hypothalamic differentiation and (b) gonadal function and sexual behaviour during the functional phase of the hypothalamus after puberty. The changes in gonadal function and sexual behaviour, which can be produced by experimental disturbances of the process of hypothalamic differentiation, are shown to be part of one common system in neuro-endocrine syndromes. Comparable syndromes of gonadal disorders and sexual deviations occur in various human diseases (Stein-Leventhal syndrome, congenital adrenogenital syndrome, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, testicular feminization, and congenital hypo-, bi- and homosexuality). The aetiopathogenetic factors which may be present in the foetoplacental unit are discussed in their relation to possible prophylaxis and treatment in the future.
