Summary
Alterations in the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and structural changes in the diencephalon and brain stem after decerebration produced by short-lasting cerebral compression were studied. Two linear primary ischaemic lesions with BBB damage localized parallel to the tentorium were found. The first zone was in the plana gyrus cinguli—massa intermedia of the thalamus and corpora mamillaria of the hypothalamus. The second zone extended from the superior and inferior colliculi of the lamina quadrigemina through the tegmentum to the border of pons. In electrophysiological tests, such as the blink reflex, R2, disappeared earlier than R1 and the auditory brain-stem evoked potentials (BAEP) suggesting that the first signs signs of decerebration could be caused by primary ischaemic lesions of the diencephalon whilst the mesencephalon and pons structures were damaged at a later stage.
