Abstract

From time to time a natural rock slope fails without any interference of man. Frequent are the cases where a mountain is just stable in its natural conditions, but is unable to support a supplementary load exerted e.g. by an arch dam. In a similar manner, the construction of underground cavities creates open surfaces in a rock mass which may be fissured and higly stressed being thus unable to withstand the new sollicitations. All these phenomena gave rise to the development of rock stabilisation techniques.
