Abstract

For prognostic evaluation of head injuries with diffuse lesions, twelve French-speaking neurosurgical units started a cooperative study on patients admitted to hospital within the twelve first hours following injury; the cases were strictly selected according to five criteria related to time before admission, the lack of any expanding lesion on the angiogram or the CT scan, good respiratory status at time of examination, lack of any anoxic hypoxic or ischaemic event, and the level of consciousness as evaluated according to the Teasdale and Jennett scale.
