Abstract
With reference to the usual classification the GISs are assumed to be divided into two categories: those supporting decision makers (DSS: decision support systems) and those of the managerial type (utility company GISs). Only the latter, at least in Italy, have already achieved a notable level of success.
The DSS-GISs, on the other hand, haven’t yet taken off, these being the ones which are of greatest interest to our scientific community. In fact, DSS-GISs see the territory not merely as a topographical reference to give a spatial link to technological and service networks, but as a real subject composed of soil, natural features, climatic elements, infrastructures, populations, activities, public services and rules and regulations.
The contributions of geodesy, topography, photogrammetry, remote sensing, image processing and so on are the determining factors in the DSS-GISs (which from now on we shall refer to only as GISs); those are therefore of most interest to us, and those to which we shall turn our attention in this paper.
