Abstract
This chapter is devoted to the optimal design of a grillage of horizontal beams that are to transmit a given vertical, downward loading to given supports. The beams are to have rectangular cross sections of a common uniform height but variable width. The given loading is to be at the load-carrying capacity of the grillage, and the total volume of the beams is to be minimized.
