Rigid, Perfectly Plastic Methods

Abstract

In many energy absorbing systems and structural crashworthiness problems, the external impact energy is absorbed through the inelastic behaviour of a ductile material. Moreover, in these extreme conditions of interest, the inelastic strains are large and dominate the elastic behaviour. Thus, the idealisation of a rigid, perfectly plastic material may be used for theoretical and numerical methods of analysis with little sacrifice in accuracy.
