Zusammenfassung
In diesem Kapitel wollen wir diejenigen Probleme der Thomas-Fermi-Theorie besprechen, deren Lösung sich fast ausschließlich auf Methoden der Variationsrechnung stützt. Bezüglich Fragen der Gültigkeit und der physikalischen Interpretation verweisen wir auf W. Thirring [IX.1], E. Lieb und B. Simon [IX.2] und die dort zitierte Literatur. Hier nicht bewiesene Aussagen sind in [IX.1] und zum Teil in [IX.3] begründet. Ausgangspunkt der Thomas-Fermi-Theorie (TFT) ist das Problem, die Grundzustandsenergie quantenmechanischer Viel-Elektronensysteme zu bestimmen. In der TFT versucht man, dieses lineare Problem dadurch zu lösen, daß man ein die quantenmechanische Grundzustandsenergie approximierendes nicht-lineares Funktional ℰ, nämlich das Thomas-Fermi-Energie-Funktional

unter der Nebenbedingung
zu minimieren versucht. In diesem Kapitel setzen wir ʃ = ʃℝ3. (In der Form (9.1) für ℰ ist unter Ausnutzung von Skaleneigenschaften eine bequeme Normierung gewählt worden.)
